The Boston Festival Orchestra's highly anticipated fourth Summer Stage season promises an enchanting journey into the realms of fantasy, storytelling, and boundless imagination. Under the baton of Alyssa Wang, the orchestra presents three spellbinding concerts in the historic Jordan Hall. Listen as the orchestra delves into the art of storytelling through music, featuring some of the most imaginative orchestral masterpieces in the repertoire, such as Stravinsky’s Firebird and Rimsky-Korsakov’s Scheherazade. On July 20, the BFO joins forces with the students of the New England Conservatory’s Summer Orchestra Institute to perform in their first ever side-by-side concert featuring Gustav’s Holst’s iconic, The Planets.

Immerse yourself in a fantastical musical journey at the Boston Festival Orchestra's first concert of the summer, "Firebird." This imaginative program unfolds with Rossini's humorous overture from the opera Semiramide. The orchestra then delves into the contemporary with Missy Mizzoli's electric Orpheus Undone, a modern interpretation of the tragic tale of Orpheus and his lover Eurydice. The grand finale is Stravinsky's beloved ballet, The Firebird, whose astonishing orchestral effects bring to life the mystical folkloric tale of Prince Ivan and the magical creature that saves him.

Embark on a celestial odyssey at the Boston Festival Orchestra's second Summer Stage concert, "The Planets.” Occurring just one day before the 55th anniversary of the Apollo 11 moon landing, this extraordinary event explores the mystery and endlessness of space. It also marks a significant collaboration with the New England Conservatory, as the BFO serves as Ensemble-in-Residence for NEC’s Summer Orchestra Institute. In a special twist, the BFO joins forces with Summer Orchestra Institute students for a side-by-side performance. The program, aptly named The Planets, showcases Gustav Holst's cosmic masterpiece alongside Kaija Saariaho's companion piece, Asteroid 4179: Toutatis.

This enchanting afternoon of storytelling begins with the BFO's own pianist, Ruoting Li, as soloist, bringing to life Qigang Chen’s Franco-Chinese masterpiece Er Huang. The orchestra then takes center stage to perform Rimsky-Korsakov's Scheherazade, a four-movement adventure inspired by the Arabian Nights tale of a woman who cleverly saves her own life by spinning fantastical stories for the Sultan over 1000 nights. You won’t want to miss the breathtaking conclusion of the BFO’s fourth season!
